Here's a cheerful parrot on a thick wooden branch, holding on with both feet. In one claw it has a peeled banana, and it's taking a big bite. The round eye, curved beak, tufted head feathers, scalloped wings and long tail all have bold, clean outlines that small hands can follow easily. Big monstera leaves and spiky tropical fronds fill the corners and frame the bird without crowding it. The banana peel splits into curling flaps, a fun place to practice shading. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the large body and head area of the parrot with bright red, leaving the face area white.
- 2Color the wings and the tail feathers with lemon yellow on the lower wing and sky blue on the lower wing tips and tail feathers.
- 3Paint the banana with pale cream and its peel with lemon yellow, then color the claw and finger in bright red.
- 4Color the branch with dark brown on the main part and tan brown at the right end, then add golden yellow to the foot rings gripping it.
- 5Fill the leaves in the corners with emerald green, dark green and grass green, alternating shades for variety.
- 6Optional: Add a little coral pink to the tongue and leave the eye whites, banana highlight and small leaf highlights white.
