Night Sky Peacock Watching the Moon and Fireflies

A young peacock sits on a grassy hill with its head tilted up, big round eyes fixed on a large crescent moon. Three round-tipped feathers form a tuft on its head, and its long tail spills down the hillside in layers, each feather marked with an oval eye pattern. The wing has scalloped feathers, and the chest has little curved marks. Three smiling fireflies with glowing tails hover close by, and small and medium stars dot the night sky. Rounded leafy bushes and grass tufts fill the ground. Big shapes and open spaces work for preschoolers and early elementary kids, while the tail gives older ones plenty of detail. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the peacock's body and neck in bright blue, leaving the crest feathers and the eye whites white.
- 2Fill the wings with teal and royal blue, and add the band across the top of the wing in grass green.
- 3Color the tail feathers in forest green, grass green, teal and olive green, leaving the eye rings for later.
- 4Paint the tail eye centers in navy blue and the rings in warm gray, mustard yellow and golden yellow, then color the beak, feet and stars in golden yellow.
- 5Color the bushes in light green and the fireflies' wings in sky blue, leaving the background white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading on the wing and tail using a deeper shade of the same colors.
