Picnic Time for a Duck Under a Big Tree

On a checkered picnic blanket sits a smiling duckling, feet stuck out in front, wings relaxed and beak wide open. Next to it are a round apple with a leaf on the stem, a stacked sandwich with lettuce peeking out, and a woven picnic basket with a handle and a little latch. A big leafy tree with a textured trunk shades everything, and bushes and grass tufts fill the background. Small hands will enjoy the big open spaces on the duckling and the blanket squares, while the basket weave and leaves give older kids some detail. Sunny yellow with an orange beak and feet works for the duckling, and the apple can be red or green. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the duck: color its body, head and wings in yellow, and fill the tongue in rose pink, leaving the eye whites white.
- 2Color the duck's beak and both feet in orange, then add a few small yellow touches where the head meets the body.
- 3Fill the tree trunk in brown and the leaves in leaf green, leaving the small pale highlights on the top of the canopy white.
- 4Color the grass and bushes with light green and dark green, using dark green for the darker bush shapes on the left and right.
- 5Color the picnic basket in caramel and the apple in bright red, then fill the sandwich bread in cream and light brown.
- 6Finish the checkered blanket by coloring the red squares in bright red and the pink squares in light pink, leaving the rest white. Optional: add a little shading under the duck and basket with a slightly darker shade of the same color.
