This chubby puffin stands on a grassy cliff with two small fish dangling from its big, striped beak. It has a round head, a large shiny eye, feathered wings with scalloped tips and wide webbed feet gripping the rocky edge. Tufts of grass grow around the feet. Behind the bird, a few rows of wavy lines show the sea, and two puffy clouds drift in the sky. Big shapes and bold lines make it a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Bright orange and red on the beak, white cheeks and a black or deep navy back look right, and silvery blue and green fish would stand out nicely. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the sea on both sides of the horizon line in sea blue, including the wave lines, and leave the water behind the legs in the same blue.
- 2Color the two clouds in pale sky blue, leaving the sky itself white.
- 3Color the puffin's head top, back, wings and tail feathers charcoal gray, keeping the face, belly and eye whites white.
- 4Color the beak with a bright red top stripe, a tangerine orange middle band and a golden yellow lower part.
- 5Fill the two fish in pale silver blue, keeping their eyes and small fin areas white, and color the feet and beak edges carrot orange.
- 6Optional: Color the grass in grass green and the rocks in warm gray, then add a few darker lines on the rocks for depth.
