This round, cheerful chick stands in a puddle with both wings out wide and its beak open in a happy chirp. It's wearing tall rain boots, and the ripples around its feet show it's in the middle of a splash. A small cloud with three raindrops floats in the upper right corner, and water splashes curl up on both sides of the puddle. The chick has big sparkly eyes, a little tuft of feathers on its head and fluffy chest feathers. Thick, clean lines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building crayon control. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the chick's head, body and wings: color them light yellow, leaving the eye whites bright white.
- 2Color the beak orange, then fill the open mouth with soft pink.
- 3Color both rain boots, including the cuffs and bottoms, bright red.
- 4Color the puddle, the three large and small splashes, and all the raindrops sky blue.
- 5Leave the cloud and the space between the chick's legs white so the page feels airy.
- 6Optional: add a few lighter or darker strokes of the same color on the body and boots to give them a little shine and depth.
