In the middle of the page sits a round watermelon with sparkly wide eyes, curved eyebrows, and a big open-mouth smile, so it looks both happy and curious. Wavy stripes run from the stem at the top down around its body, which leaves lots of sections to fill in. Two veined leaves grow from the stem, and a long tendril curls away and finishes in a swirl. You'll also spot little grass tufts at the bottom left, center, and right. Lines are bold and shapes are big, so crayons or chunky markers work nicely for preschoolers and early elementary kids. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big dark green middle of the watermelon and the dark green stripes on both sides, using forest green.
- 2Fill the light green outer edge and the light stripes on the left and right with lime green, leaving the thin black lines as they are.
- 3Color both leaves and the curly tendril at the top with lime green.
- 4Fill the open smiling mouth with cherry red and add the soft pink tongue at the bottom of the mouth.
- 5Leave the eye whites and the small shine spots in the eyes white, then fill the rest of each eye with forest green or black for a bright, cute look.
- 6Optional: Add a few light diagonal strokes in a darker shade over the watermelon to give it a textured, pencil-like feel.
