Scarecrow and Bird Watching Over the Cabbage Vegetable Garden

With his arms stretched wide on a wooden pole, this friendly scarecrow has a little bird perched on his right shoulder, like they're having a chat. He wears a floppy straw hat, a checked shirt with straw sticking out at the cuffs, and patched overalls with a front pocket and two buttons. Round cabbages and tall leafy plants fill the garden around his feet, and a simple wooden fence with rounded bushes stands behind. Big shapes and clear outlines work well for preschoolers, while the plaid sleeves, straw fringe and leafy cabbages give older kids more to tackle. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the cabbage heads and bushes: color the outer leaves of the cabbages and the background bushes in leaf green, and the inner cabbage cores in light green.
- 2Fill the ground and wooden post with soil brown, then color the fence posts and the patches on the overalls in burnt orange.
- 3Color the overalls and straps in denim blue, and the patch on the right leg in leaf green.
- 4Paint the face in warm peach and the straw hair and hat brim in golden yellow, with the hat band in bright red and the bird in bright yellow. Leave the eye whites and the highlight on the nose white.
- 5Color the plaid sleeves with cream and coral red squares, and use olive green for a few squares on the left sleeve.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shade of the same color along the edges of the overalls and cabbage leaves to make them look more rounded.
