Scowling Popeye Chatting with Olive Oyl at the Door

Popeye stands beside an open door with a scowl on his face, one eye squeezed shut and his pipe sticking out of his mouth. He wears his sailor cap, a collared top with three round buttons, and baggy pants. His huge forearms are bent, and small motion lines show his fists swinging. Next to him, Olive Oyl rests one finger on her chin and looks puzzled, with her hair pulled into a bun. She wears a ruffled collar, a bracelet on each wrist, a long skirt with stripes near the hem, and big flat shoes. The door frame and the corner of the room are drawn in simple lines behind them. Since the outlines are bold and the shapes are large, this page works well for younger kids. Try giving Popeye a navy top and Olive a bright skirt, then ask your child what each character might be thinking in this moment.
