Bike-Riding Hedgehog with a Basket of Apples

A cheerful hedgehog pedals a little bicycle down a winding path, with a wicker basket on the front holding two apples and a couple of leaves. It has big round eyes, an open smiling mouth, small round ears and a coat of spiky, jagged quills down its back. The park behind it is simple to follow: rounded bushy trees, a bare-branched tree on the left, fluffy clouds in the sky and grass tufts along the ground. Large shapes and clear outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids building pencil control. Warm brown and tan work for the quills, bright red and green for the apples, and sunny yellow or sky blue for the bike. Print it free for a rainy afternoon or a classroom activity. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big hedgehog: fill the spiky back and head spines with warm brown, and the face and body with cream. Leave the eye whites and little shine spots white.
- 2Color the tree leaves, bushes and grass next: use leaf green and forest green for the trees and bushes, and lime green for the path and grass patches.
- 3Fill the top-left cloud with baby blue and the sky background with nothing, leaving the right cloud white. Use bright blue for the bike seat.
- 4Color the basket in light brown, leaving the gaps between the weaves white, then fill the three big apples and the top apple with apple red.
- 5Finish the bike: color the frame and fork burnt orange, the handlebar and grip sky blue, the tires charcoal gray, and the wheel spokes silver gray and pale sage. Add the coral pink tongue last.
- 6Optional: add a little shading by pressing slightly darker on the hedgehog's spines and the shady side of the apples to make them look rounder.
