Smiling Hen and Her Four Chicks Strolling Past the Barn

A big, smiling mother hen walks through the farmyard while four fluffy chicks scurry around her, ready to print for free. Her wing is layered with scalloped feathers, and she has a comb on her head and a wattle under her beak. Behind them are a wooden barn with a crossed-board door and a small hayloft window, a split-rail fence, a leafy tree, rolling hills and puffy clouds, plus a wooden barrel by the barn. Daisy-style flowers, grass tufts and small pebbles fill the foreground. Try a warm reddish-brown hen with a bright red comb and a different shade of yellow for each chick. Red barn boards and colorful flowers give kids lots of room for markers or crayons. Younger children can handle the large shapes while the feathers and wood grain keep older kids busy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the sky-blue cloud at the top with sky blue, and leave the sky white.
- 2Fill the barn walls, roof trim and door frame with barn red, and color the roof edges with warm gray, leaving the barn door panel white.
- 3Color the hen's body and belly with caramel brown, then fill the wings and tail with chestnut brown and amber for lighter feather tips.
- 4Color the hen's beak and feet with golden yellow and the comb and wattles with barn red.
- 5Color the three yellow chicks with lemon yellow, leaving the middle chick's body white with a lemon yellow wing patch.
- 6Color the grass, bushes and tree with grass green and lime green, and leave the flower petals white. Optional: add darker shading under the hen's wings with a deeper brown to make the feathers pop.
