Thirsty Squirrel Crouching by a Lily Pad Pond

Coloring guide
At the water's edge, a little squirrel crouches low, its big fluffy tail curling up behind and its tongue just touching the pond. Ripples spread around its mouth, a fun spot to color in soft blues. Two flat lily pads float in front, smooth rocks line the bank, and tall grass blades and two cattails rise on either side. The squirrel has large round eyes, pointed ears, whiskers and tiny paws gripping the ground. Bold, clear outlines and a mix of big and small areas work for preschoolers and early elementary kids alike. Try reddish-brown for the fur and tail, and fresh greens for the lily pads and reeds. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the squirrel's big fluffy tail, back, head and paws with warm brown, leaving the eyes white.
- 2Fill the rocks and the small pebble with light gray, keeping a little white shine on the larger rocks.
- 3Paint the grass blades, bushes and the lily pads with leaf green and light green, and color the two cattails warm brown.
- 4Add coral pink inside the ears, on the nose and on the tongue, and use cream on the muzzle and cheeks.
- 5Optional: Add a little darker brown along the squirrel's belly and under the tail, and a touch of extra green at the base of the grass for depth.
