A graceful swan glides over a calm pond while three fluffy ducklings paddle in a tidy line right behind her. She has a long curved neck, a gentle eye and layered wing feathers that are fun to color. Each bird has ripples circling it on the water. Up front, two open water lilies sit on big lily pads, and tall cattails and grassy leaves frame both sides. Across the pond, rounded bushes and a small grass tuft line the far shore. Preschoolers can start with the big shapes while older kids tackle the tiny feather details. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the lake: fill the water area and the ripples around the swan and ducklings with sky blue, leaving the swan's body white.
- 2Color the bushes along the far shore, the grass tufts, and the grassy strip at the water's edge with grass green.
- 3Fill the reeds with leaf green and the cattail tops and stalks with cattail brown.
- 4Color the three ducklings golden yellow and the swan's beak orange, keeping the eyes white with a black dot for the pupil.
- 5Paint the water lily flowers pink and the lily pads leaf green, then fill the swan's back wing feathers with light gray while keeping the rest of the swan white.
- 6Optional: add a few darker sky blue strokes on the water near the swan and ducklings to make the lake look deeper.
