Three Bees Buzzing Around a Hive This Spring

Three round-eyed bees with big wings zip around a striped, dome-shaped skep beehive, with dotted flight trails behind them. The hive has a small arched doorway and sits on a simple wooden bench with plank legs and a couple of nail details. On both sides grow tall flowers with wide petals and round centers, along with smaller blooms, leafy stems and little tufts of grass along the bottom. Bold outlines and roomy shapes make it an easy choice for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the printable PDF is free. Golden yellow works for the hive rings and bee stripes, and pink, purple and orange flowers will make the bees stand out. The dotted trails are a fun place for a bright crayon or marker line. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the hive: fill the rounded body bands and dome top with golden yellow, leaving the small shine on the side of the hive white.
- 2Color the wooden stand in wood brown for the table top, crossbar and front, and use tan for the two side legs.
- 3Fill the hive entrance with dark brown, then add the bee bodies and heads in golden yellow with charcoal black stripes.
- 4Paint the three bee wings sky blue, leaving a little white at the edges for a light look.
- 5Color the flower petals coral red and violet purple, add golden yellow or orange centers, and fill the small flowers in orange.
- 6Finish the leaves in leaf green and the small stones in warm gray, keeping the grass and background white. Optional: add a few darker strokes on the hive edges for depth.
