Whale Tail Lifting From Rippling Water

Coloring guide
This simple line drawing shows a big whale tail rising straight out of the sea, with the two flukes spread wide and their wavy trailing edges clearly outlined. Curved lines on each fluke show where the tail bends, and the thick stalk narrows as it goes down into the water. Four teardrop drops fall around the tail, with one more hanging from the tip of each fluke. Rings of ripples spread out around the base in wide, curved lines. Bold outlines and large open spaces make it a good choice for preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building pencil control. Deep blue or purple looks great on the tail, with light blue drops and a few shades of teal in the ripples. Free to print or download. Looking for more? A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- ocean blue
- sky blue
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the whale tail, including both flukes and the stem, with ocean blue. Use light back-and-forth strokes so the paper texture shows a little.
- 2Fill each of the six water drops hanging around the tail with sky blue, keeping the strokes inside the outlines.
- 3Leave the ripple lines around the base of the tail and the background white so the water stays bright and airy.
- 4Optional: Add a few extra diagonal strokes of ocean blue on the tail's stem and flukes to give it a bit more depth.
- 5Optional: Go over the drops with a slightly darker sky blue at their bottom edges for a simple shadow effect.
