Sunset Whale Tail Rising from the Ocean

Coloring guide
A huge whale tail lifts out of the sea with both wide flukes spread open in front of a half-circle sun. Short rays shine out from the sun, and three simple birds glide across the sky. Wavy lines cross the water on both sides of the tail, and round ripples spread out where the tail meets the surface. Outlines are bold and shapes are large, so younger kids with chunky crayons can manage it, while older kids can try shading the waves. Warm oranges, pinks and yellows suit the sun, and a deep blue or purple tail will stand out against the glow. This free printable is a good fit for a quiet afternoon, an ocean lesson or a calm bedtime activity. This page is part of our Whale coloring pages collection — check out Dolphin and Shark too.
A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- steel blue
- golden yellow
- pale sky blue
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the whale tail, including its stem going down into the water, with steel blue.
- 2Color the half-circle sun behind the tail with golden yellow.
- 3Fill both seagulls, the one at the top left and the two at the top right, with pale sky blue.
- 4Leave the sky, the sun rays, the waves and the ripples around the whale white so the background stays bright.
- 5Optional: add a few light strokes of a slightly darker blue along the edges of the tail for a little depth.
