Leaning low at the water's edge, a fluffy wolf touches its nose to the surface, and small ripples spread out around its muzzle. The ears are pointed, the eyes look down at the water, and the thick fur is drawn in jagged, tufted lines along the back, chest and bushy tail. Smooth rounded rocks and tall cattails fill the foreground. On the far bank, a leafy tree, a couple of small pine trees and some shrubs stand against the sky. The wavy lines of the stream leave kids lots of space to try different shading. Soft grays and warm browns suit the coat, and bright blues and teals will make the ripples stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wolf's body, back, and legs in medium gray, using gentle strokes that follow the fur direction.
- 2Color the wolf's inner ears and the tree trunk details with coral pink and brown, leaving the eye whites and eye shine white.
- 3Fill the stream with sky blue, leaving the ripple lines and the white highlights around the wolf's nose white.
- 4Color the trees and bushes in forest green and grass green, then add light green to the grassy bank and grass strip.
- 5Use light gray for the rocks along the stream and the cattail heads at the left, keeping the cattail tops white as in the example.
- 6Finish with cream on the wolf's front paw and hind leg, and add a little extra shading to the rocks if you like.
