A wooden compost bin with its hinged lid propped open sits in the middle of the page, and the scraps inside are fun to color: a banana peel, an apple core, a few leaves and a pile of crumpled bits. The bin has planks with wood-grain lines, round nails or bolts and thick corner posts. In the grassy soil out front, two smiling earthworms peek up from the dirt, and a small leafy plant grows beside the bin on the right. Tufts of grass dot the ground. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wooden bin: fill the front boards, side panels, posts and lid with wood brown, leaving the wood grain lines as they are.
- 2Color the banana with golden yellow, then add the lid hinges and hinge area in slate gray.
- 3Fill the compost inside the bin with dark brown and medium brown, then add dark olive bits and bright orange scraps for variety.
- 4Color the apple red at the top and leave its inner flesh pale cream, adding amber orange chunks around it.
- 5Paint the two worms in coral pink, and use leaf green for the plant leaves and stem with lime green on the upper leaves.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading under the lid and along the bin edges to make the wood look more three-dimensional.
