A smiling young horse trots through a shallow stream with one front hoof lifted and small droplets splashing up around its legs. The long mane falls over its neck, the tail sweeps out behind, and big eyes with a gentle grin make it look friendly. Rounded rocks, cattails on both sides, little tufts of grass and a grassy hill with fluffy leafy trees fill out the surroundings. Ripple lines in the water give kids plenty of detail to work on. Thanks to the large body and simple outlines, this free printable works for preschoolers up through early elementary. Warm chestnut brown with a golden mane looks great, and light blues and teals for the water help the splashes stand out. Crayons, markers or colored pencils all do the job. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the horse's body, head, legs and ears with caramel brown, and color the muzzle with peach.
- 2Color the mane, forelock and long tail with butter yellow, using loose strokes so the hair looks flowing.
- 3Color the trees and bushes with leaf green, the grassy hill with bright lime, and the tree trunks with warm brown.
- 4Fill the stream with sky blue and the splashes with pale blue, then color the rocks light gray and the hooves charcoal gray. Leave the sky white.
- 5Color the cattails with caramel brown and the inner ears with soft pink and dusty rose, then add the grass tufts in leaf green.
- 6Optional: add a little sage gray shading along the horse's legs and the far side of the body for depth.
