Here a smiling boy jogs across a grassy field in a patterned bodysuit with an elephant emblem on the chest. A cheerful baby elephant trots right beside him, trunk lifted high, shooting a fountain of water droplets into the air. That spray is a fun shape to color. Flat-topped acacia trees and low hills line the horizon, and small grass tufts dot the ground. Outlines are bold and clean with big open spaces, so preschoolers and early elementary kids can handle it with crayons or markers. Light blue suits the water drops and soft gray fits the elephant, and then you can add bright greens and yellows for the grass and trees. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big areas: color the boy's suit, arms and trousers in bright blue, and the shirt stripes and sleeve bands in sky blue, leaving the round chest emblem white.
- 2Fill the elephant's head, body, legs and trunk with cool gray, then add pink to the inner ear and a charcoal gray tail. Use coral red for the tongue.
- 3Paint the savanna: teal and sky blue for the distant hills, leaf green for the acacia trees and bushes, lime green and forest green for the grass tufts.
- 4Color the boy's skin and neck in peach, his hair in brown, and the water spray over the trunk and in the air in sky blue.
- 5Add the yellow details: golden yellow for the knee pads, shoe stripes and chest emblem, and soft yellow for the belt. Keep the eye whites and small highlights white.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading with a slightly darker shade of each color along the edges of the suit, the elephant's body and the hills to give the scene more depth.
