Mouth open in a toothy grin, a small feathered raptor bounds through the undergrowth with one wing-like arm flung out behind it. The head is turned sideways, showing a round bright eye and a fluffy crest of feathers on the neck, and a shaggy coat covers the body. Both clawed hands are lifted in front of the chest as the long legs push off the ground, and every foot has curved talons. Big fern fronds curl in from the top corners, tall grass fills the lower corners, and a few small tufts dot the ground. All those feather textures give kids a lot of detail to work through. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the ferns and the grass: use fern green for the big leaves and grass green and lime green for the blades at the bottom and sides.
- 2Fill the raptor's head, chest, and front of the neck with cream, keeping the eye white and the teeth white.
- 3Color the back, neck frill, and main wing with sky blue, using royal blue for the darker parts of the neck, arm, and wing.
- 4Add golden yellow to the wing tips, the feathers on the arms, and the lower wing feathers.
- 5Color the legs and feet orange, the claws charcoal gray, and the dark claw dark brown; fill the open mouth with coral pink.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading with a deeper blue or green along the edges of the body and leaves for extra depth.
