This round, fluffy baby chick faces forward with a happy open-beaked smile, big sparkly eyes with long lashes, and a small tuft of feathers on its head. The little wings hang at its sides, and a scalloped line of chest feathers gives it some texture. Its webbed feet sit in a patch of grass, with tall blades on both sides and a few simple flowers with round centers in the corners. Thick outlines and big open areas make it a good fit for preschoolers and early learners, and it works well as a quiet classroom activity. Sunny yellow for the body, orange for the beak and feet, and pink or purple flowers would look cheerful, with green for the grass. One note: even though it sits in the Peacock category, the picture shows a baby chick and not a peacock. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the chick's round body, back wing feathers, and the chin fluff in bright yellow, leaving the eyes and flowers white.
- 2Fill the two little legs and the toes of both feet with tangerine orange, and color the beak on top of the face the same tangerine orange.
- 3Color the open mouth inside the beak with rose pink so it looks cheerful.
- 4Paint the grass blades and stems in grass green, then add the centers of the three flowers in bright yellow.
- 5Keep the flower petals, eye whites, and the small shine spots in the eyes white. Optional: add a little darker yellow shading under the wing and belly to make the chick look fluffier.
