Arms and legs stretched wide, a smiling flying squirrel glides across the page and shows off the loose folds of skin that help it soar. Big shiny eyes, long whiskers, round ears and a fluffy curled tail come with plenty of fur lines to color. Behind it are a crescent moon, scattered stars and puffy outlined clouds in the night sky, with pine trees and bushy treetops along the bottom edge. Younger kids can handle the large open shapes of the gliding skin, and the fur and trees give older kids more to do. Soft browns and warm grays suit the squirrel, with a creamy tummy, and deep blue or purple behind lets the moon stay bright yellow. A lovely free printable for a quiet evening. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the squirrel's fluffy body, tail, and head in warm brown, leaving the eye whites and teeth white.
- 2Color the big stretchy wing membranes in lavender gray, keeping the thin edges as they are.
- 3Fill the sky clouds in sky blue, and leave the moon and stars white.
- 4Paint the inside of the ears and the cheeks in light pink, then add a hot pink nose.
- 5Color the pine trees in forest green and the bushes and grass at the bottom in leaf green, leaving the little snow spots white.
- 6Optional: Add a darker brown shadow along the tail and belly to make the fur look fuller.
