Little Boy Building a Beach Sandcastle

Kneeling in the sand, this happy boy holds a small shovel in one hand and pats the top of a bucket-shaped sandcastle with the other. He's in a short-sleeved t-shirt and shorts, and the messy hair and big grin are fun to color. The sea is drawn with gentle wavy lines behind him, and a little sailboat floats near the horizon under two puffy clouds. Dots mark the sand, and a scallop shell and a starfish tuck into the bottom corners. Younger kids can handle the large shapes, while the shell, waves and dots keep older kids busy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sea areas on both sides of the horizon line and the sea behind the boy in sky blue, leaving small white wave lines untouched.
- 2Color the two clouds and the sand shore strip in pale blue and pale sand, then fill the wide sandy areas around the boy with white or leave them light.
- 3Fill the boy's face, neck, ears, arms and legs with skin tone, keeping the eye whites, teeth and small shine spots white.
- 4Color the hair chocolate brown, then the shirt tomato red with the collar, sleeve cuffs and hem in golden yellow.
- 5Fill the shorts in royal blue with ice blue trim, color the shovel leaf green, and color the sandcastle golden yellow with its base and top in the same shade.
- 6Finish the seashells in deep orange and apricot, the starfish in deep orange, the sailboat hull in mustard yellow and the sails in cream white. Optional tip: add a little darker shade of the same color along one side of the shirt and sandcastle for depth.
