Peekaboo Squirrel in a Tree Hollow with Acorns

A cheerful squirrel pokes its head out of a round hole in a big tree trunk. Both little paws rest on the edge and its wide grin shows off its teeth. Tall tufted ears and a big fluffy tail curve around the opening. Two acorns with textured caps sit on the branch below, tucked between oak leaves, and more leaves fill the upper corners of the bark. Thick outlines and large open shapes work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the bark lines and leaf veins give older children more to do. Warm reddish-brown suits the fur, with lighter tan on the belly and cheeks. Golden browns on the acorns will make them pop against the darker bark. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big tree trunk and the branch with bark brown, leaving a few thin white streaks on the bark as highlights.
- 2Fill the hollow behind the squirrel with dark chocolate brown, making the left side of the hollow a little darker.
- 3Color the squirrel's face and body cream beige, keeping the eye whites and the teeth white.
- 4Color the bushy tail, the outer ears, both paws and the left arm squirrel orange, then add pale pink inside the ears and on the nose.
- 5Fill the oak leaves with leaf green and the two acorns, including their caps, with light brown.
- 6Optional: add a darker brown edge along the hollow and under the acorns to make them look more rounded.
