Earth Day Butterfly Perched on a Big Daisy

Big sparkly eyes, long eyelashes and a happy smile give this butterfly lots of charm as it rests on the dotted center of a large daisy. Its two antennae curl up and end in round tips, and the striped body sits right above the wide, rounded petals. The big wings are filled with oval shapes and circles along the edges, so they're ideal for trying out patterns. Two large leaves frame the flower, another leaf and a stem curve along the bottom, and two small blossoms float on either side. With roomy spaces and bold lines, it suits preschoolers and early elementary kids. Purple and turquoise wings with pink circles look pretty, and sunny yellow works for the flower center. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big pink wings: color the outer wing borders and the daisy petals in rose pink, leaving small gaps of white in the background.
- 2Fill the inner upper wings with sky blue, and the large upper inner wing on the right with lavender purple.
- 3Color the wing spots and the butterfly head in bright yellow, and the lower daisy center in golden yellow with white dots left unfilled.
- 4Paint the leaves in leaf green, the stem in leaf green, and the body segments in tangerine orange and golden yellow.
- 5Add the small flowers: lilac petals with bright yellow centers, and keep the background white.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading with a darker shade of each color along the edges of the petals and wings for depth.
