A fluffy squirrel sits upright on top of a wooden fence post, a single acorn in its front paws, looking off to the side with a small smile. The big curved tail and textured fur leave lots of little areas to color. Past the fence, a round sun hangs low over a calm lake, with rolling hills, rows of leafy trees and a split-rail fence stretching into the distance. Five geese fly in a loose group across the sky. Big maple leaves fill the corners and the foreground, and a few more lie scattered on the ground. This free printable works for an autumn lesson or a quiet afternoon at the table. Try warm reddish-brown on the squirrel, golden brown on the acorn, and oranges and yellows on the maple leaves and sunset sky. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sun: fill the setting sun with golden yellow and leave a little white space near the water line.
- 2Color the squirrel's fluffy tail, body and back in burnt orange, leaving the inner ear and cheek areas for later.
- 3Fill the squirrel's chest, cheek and belly with peach, and the inner ear with coral pink.
- 4Paint the fence post and its rails in driftwood gray, then color the grass, hills and leafy bushes in spring green and lime green.
- 5Add the acorn cap in mint green, the goose in chestnut brown, and the sky clouds in light sky blue, keeping the open sky white.
- 6Finish with details: deepen the trees and leaves with leaf green and forest green, and optionally add a little darker shading on the tail and the post.
