A wide-eyed baby owl sits inside a round hollow in a big tree trunk, little feet gripping the edge as it looks straight out at you. It has ear tufts, big round eyes with sparkly highlights, a small beak, scalloped belly feathers and two tucked wings. Outside the hollow, the bark is drawn with long flowing lines, and leafy branches reach out on both sides. Overhead, a crescent moon and five small stars set a calm nighttime mood. Younger kids will like the large open shapes, and older kids can take on the feather and bark details. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the owl's chest and face: fill the big round belly and the face area between the eyes with cream, leaving the big round eye whites untouched.
- 2Color the owl's head feathers and wing tops with tan brown, then fill the wings and their tips with sienna brown.
- 3Fill the back wall of the tree hollow with dark brown, working around the owl so the edges stay neat.
- 4Color the beak and the owl's feet with orange, adding a tiny touch to each toe.
- 5Paint the leaves on the branches with leaf green, and color the stars with golden yellow, leaving the moon and tree trunk white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker brown along the edges of the wings and the inside of the hollow to make the owl pop.
