Squirrel Hugging an Acorn on an Oak Tree Trunk

Clinging to a thick, textured trunk, this cheerful squirrel hugs a big acorn in both paws and grins with two little front teeth. Its fluffy tail curls out behind it. Oak branches with lobed leaves and a dangling acorn frame the top corner, and more oak leaves and another acorn run along the right side of the trunk. In the bottom left, a small cluster of acorns rests on oak leaves next to soft bushy shapes and a few blades of grass. Big open areas on the body and tail are easy for little hands, and the leaf veins and bark lines give older kids more detail. Reddish-brown fur, golden tan acorns and orange and green leaves would look lovely. It's a free printable, so go ahead and print a few copies. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the squirrel's big tail, head, body and back leg in burnt orange, using gentle strokes that follow the fur direction.
- 2Fill the squirrel's belly, chest patch and inner right ear with light cream, leaving the whiskers and eye whites white.
- 3Color the nose coral pink, then give the ear tips and the right ear a burnt orange finish.
- 4Color the held acorn and the two lower acorns in golden yellow, and the top left acorn in pale tan.
- 5Paint the oak leaves in leaf green, and the small leaf on the lower right in olive green, leaving the leaf veins white.
- 6Fill the tree trunk's right edge and lower trunk with bark brown, keeping the bark highlights white. Optional: Add a little extra bark brown along the shadow side of the squirrel for depth.
