A big happy watermelon wedge is the star here, with wide sparkly eyes, rosy cheeks, an open smile and teardrop-shaped seeds scattered across its face. At the lower left, two little smiling cherries hang from joined stems with a single leaf, and a peeled-looking banana rests on the right. Small tufts of grass run around the bottom of the page. Thick lines and open shapes keep it easy for small hands, so this free printable suits preschoolers and early elementary kids. Red and pink work for the melon, deep green for the rind band and bright yellow for the banana. Then give each cherry its own shade of red so they stand out from the watermelon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the big triangle of watermelon flesh with watermelon red, leaving the two eye whites uncolored.
- 2Color the banana with golden yellow and its stem tip and end with chocolate brown.
- 3Fill the thin band under the flesh with pale cream, then color the bottom and left edge of the rind with dark green.
- 4Color the cherries watermelon red and the cherry leaf and grass with leaf green, keeping the small highlight on the cherry stems white.
- 5Add the smiling mouth in deep red and the tongue in coral pink.
- 6Finish with black: fill the watermelon seeds, the pupils of the eyes, and the tiny grass tufts. Optional: add a little darker green along the shadowed part of the rind for depth.
